Should I learn trumpet?
I have been playing clarinet for 5 years I am 14 and first chair. I am going to be going to high school next year and there is a jazz band. My father played the trumpet when he was little but then quit. I am going to teach my self with the Standard of Excellence books. I was talking to the jazz band teacher and he said that i could then be in jazz band, but I said that I prob. won't be good enough after just learning it for one summer, and he said that I would make it. My dad said her would get me a used trumpet. Do you think I should play it? Do you have any tips?
I think you could do it. The face muscles used to play clarinet are used to make a sound on a brass instrument so you should already have some endurance developed.
I would suggest focusing on simple overtone exercises (where you change pitch without changing the valves) at first because that will probably be the biggest change from clarinet. Don't jam the trumpet into your face and try to remember to keep your fingers curved when pressing the valves. If you lips get tired, whistling (or attempting to) can help them recover, but don't practice to the point where you're in pain.
Since you already have the ability to play an instrument, I would also suggest going for a lesson or two with someone who can help make sure you're not developing any bad habits.
